What Project?

HINGENEERING Consulting provided the structural engineering assessment and investigation of the vibration effects due to a newly upgraded air cooler fan motors and gearboxes in an oil and gas facility in Fort St. John, British Columbia.

After such upgrade took place, relatively high vibration amplitudes was observed and measured in all directions (along the axis of the motor and gearbox, horizontally as well as vertically) at the supports of the gearbox and the motor.

Moreover, the high vibrations affected the supporting steel structure. The air cooler motor and gearbox supporting structure is mainly consists of steel platform framing supported by end plates and vertical hangers to the roof of the structure, which is supported on 4 steel columns and screw piles at each corners.

The purpose of the structural report was to investigate the dynamic behavior of the existing steel structure that supports the gear box and the motor by running modal analysis. Moreover, the natural frequency of the steel structure and the cooler fan motor and gearbox should be evaluated to avoid any possible resonance phenomenon.

Finally, the report highlighted the possible steel structure reinforcements required to reduce or mitigate the velocity vibration effect induced from the cooler fans motor and gearbox on the supporting steel structure.
