HINGENEERING modeled the mid-pipe segment of the secondary containment system using finite element model.The model was composed of several layers of the containment system. The failure of the system/model was defined as material failure. Excessive pressure was considered as the failure pressure failure being the pressure at the onset of material failure occurred in any layer.

The Finite Element Analysis results indicate that the strength and failure of the mid-pipe segment under internal pressure is dominantly controlled by the carbon fiber layer. The failure of this layer will consequently lead to the failure of the polyurea layers. The carbon fiber makes the system capable of sustaining internal pressure from up to 86MPa.
