Introduction
HINGENEERING Consulting recently participated in the renowned ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference 2024, held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, from November 4th to 7th. This globally recognized event, organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers International in collaboration with dmg events, served as a hub for industry leaders, innovators, and professionals to discuss emerging trends, share knowledge, and explore cutting-edge advancements in the energy sector.
As part of this prestigious conference, HINGENEERING Consulting’s Director, Dr. Ahmed Farag, presented a pioneering research project on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for a pipeline leak secondary containment system, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to advancing pipeline integrity management.
Project Overview
For the past eighteen months, HINGENEERING Consulting has been working closely with Total Containment Inc. on a proof-of-concept project to develop an innovative containment system for pipeline leaks. This system leverages non-isotropic materials, such as polyurea and carbon fiber, to provide enhanced protection for pipelines at vulnerable locations. The primary goal is to reduce environmental impacts and establish a new framework for pipeline integrity management using advanced materials and analytical modeling.
Engineering Challenges and Solutions
The project’s main challenge lay in accurately modeling the stress-strain behavior and failure stresses of composite materials under operational conditions. These materials exhibit directional properties, requiring detailed analysis of their response to hoop and longitudinal pressures.
Through intensive research and advanced FEA simulations, our team developed a robust analytical model that:
- Predicts the mechanical performance of the containment system.
- Provides valuable insights into material behavior under varying environmental loads.
- Supports the design of lightweight, high-strength solutions that enhance pipeline safety.

Key Highlights from ADIPEC 2024
At the conference, Dr. Farag presented the findings during Session 90: Operational Excellence: The Iconic Big Data of Asset Integrity on November 6th, 2024. The presentation was attended by industry professionals, including representatives from ARAMCO and ADNOC Group, whose feedback and insights have been instrumental in refining our approach.
The session provided an opportunity to:
- Discuss the technical aspects of the FEA model and the performance of non-isotropic materials.
- Highlight the alignment of the project with the Risk-Based Design and Assessment framework outlined in CSA-Z662.
- Explore collaborative opportunities to further enhance the containment system and its applications.
The insights gained from ADIPEC 2024 reinforce our commitment to innovation and collaboration in the energy sector. This project represents a step forward in pipeline safety by offering a preventive engineering solution that aligns with industry best practices and environmental stewardship goals.
Looking ahead, we aim to:
- Continue refining the containment system through industry collaboration.
- Promote advanced engineering practices that prioritize sustainability and safety.
- Share knowledge and expertise to drive progress in pipeline integrity management.
